As golfers, we all know the frustration of hitting a bad shot. It’s very tough for most to shake off the disappointment and focus on the next shot. Learning how to use visualization can be a powerful took to improve your performance on the course.
What is visualization?
Also known as mental imagery or mental rehearsal, is a technique used by athletes to help them perform at a higher level.
Why it works
When we visualize hitting a good shot, our brain activates the same areas that would be used if we were actually hitting the shot, we can generate the same internal feel and the more we do this the more we can make it a reality. Visualization also help to reduce anxiety and build confidence. By using this technique we can build a positive mental image of ourselves as successful golfers, reducing self-doubt that can lead to poor performance.
Overcoming bad shots
Instead of dwelling on the shots that you hit poorly, try to visualize them as good shots. Replay the shot in your mind, but this time imagine that the ball flights exactly where you want it to go. (Must be practice over and over again to see good results).
One way to do this is to create a mental highlight reel of your best shots. Before you go out to play, take some time to visualize yourself hitting great shots. Image the feeling of hitting the ball pure, the sound it makes as it hits the face, the satisfaction of seeing it land exactly where you want it to. By creating this positive mental image, you can build confidence and reduce anxiety, leading to better performance overall.
Bad shots are part of the game of Golf, training your mind will just give you a better chance at being successful.
